When Will Romney Drop Out?

Super Tuesday’s results are in, and I believe that the Republican race for the best candidate to lead America has taken a new path. Huckabee gained great momentum and clearly did much better than Romney, despite being outspent, ignored by pundits, and ridiculed by talk radio.

Huckabee won five of the major states, and would have won several more if Romney hadn’t been in the race. If Romney were to drop out, most of his supporters would move toward Huckabee. However, if Huckabee dropped out (not likely after how well he did today) the majority of his supporters would go to McCain.

Romney has spent millions of dollars at his own expense (an estimated $40 million dollars in debt) and has to come to the stark realization that his message just isn’t resonating with the Republican base.

On the other hand, one also has to realize that Huckabee who has spent very little, was not given any attention in the national media (they have claimed it was a two person race) and has survived being hammered by talk radio. His message is resonating with an ever increasing number of Americans.

Also FOX News reports that tomorrow Huckabee will receive several key endorsements along with some serious cash as his campaign takes a major surge. Come convention time, when Huckabee takes on McCain, I believe that Huckabee will convince the Republican base that he truly is the conservative’s best choice to take America in the direction we need to go.

THE BIG QUESTION: When will Romney come to grips with reality and drop out of the race so that Huckabee can take on McCain?

  • 1) Romney drops out this week or next week. He won’t keep spending millions of his own money if he doesn’t have an honest shot at getting the nomination. He sees a stubborn southerner named Huckabee standing in his way and he won’t keep throwing good money after bad. If he sticks with it, he risks offending the GOP faithful with his negative ads that he’ll need if he takes another shot in a few years. Add to this argument the fact that Mrs. Romney was not buying her husband’s line tonight that “this campaign will go on.” If you see the clip on the news at some point, watch the Mrs and you’ll see what I mean.

    2) With a headsup campaign between McCain and Huckabee, the issues and choices become a bit more stark. McCain faces serious and passionate opposition from the stalwart forces from the right within the Republican party. Huckabee will begin to gain a lot of ground once he’s the only alternative to the moderate McCain.

    3) Huckabee will ask for as many debates as he can get. Comedy shows, the GOP debates and Walker Texas Ranger is what made Huckabee what he is today. If recent history has told us anything, it is that the more face time Huckabee gets the more support he garners. I think the biggest reason he slipped in the polls in the last couple weeks is because the media thought the race was between Romney and McCain and didn’t give him much camera time. Increased television exposure that will come from a one-on-one race will favor the Huckabee campaign.

    4) If/when Romney drops out, his delegates are up for grabs. Who will get those delegates and who will the superdelegates favor with Romney now out of the race?

  • You are right on the money with this. True conservative America is not going to rally around John McCain and he is not going to unite the party. If he is the nominee in November, the Republicans will lose. Mitt Romney is not the answer, either, because he is a fake conservative and nobody believes what he says. The only real choice America has for an authentic conservative leader (who isn’t just pretending to be one to win an election) is Mike Huckabee.

Romney needs to exit the race though because his continued campaign does nothing but seal up a victory for McCain and a loss for the Republican Party. If he exits now, the base will rally around Mike Huckabee.

As you so accurately noted, if Huckabee exits, most of his supporters will go to McCain which leaves us with the same result. The only hope for America is a swift exit by Mitt Romney.

  • Great site! We love Mike Huckabee! He is absolutely the best conservative candidate running. We have pulled him through here in Alabama and are hoping and praying Louisiana (and all other states) pull him through there! We need Mike Huckabee!!!

  • I have no idea how the super delegates work. I saw today via an email that I got that some of the delegates in Colorado may not go to Romney. Here is a copy of the email I received today:

Of course Romney won the Colorado Presidential Preference Poll – BUT, according to the reports I’m getting from our Denver Meetup Group participants and some of the Colorado Springs members, our Delegate strategy appears to have PAID OFF very well. Every precinct I’m getting reports from selected a MAJORITY of Huckabee supporters as state/congressional delegates! Our preference poll is non-binding, and delegates can vote however they wish at the county/congressional/state/national level.

I think we may have pulled a major Huckabee coup here in Colorado! Don’t believe everything the press is telling you, Mike is ALIVE AND WELL IN THE ROCKIES! We can still deliver this state’s votes at convention for Governor Huckabee

If we have a brokered convention in September then the delegates vote until one candidate gets 50% + 1 to win the nomination. Huckabee speaks at CPAC Saturday and Newt will be speaking the same day also, it is numbered to have 6,000 attending. This will help Mike since he is such a good speaker and will be the last of the candidates to speak before them. Of course, this paid off in the CA debates with his last statement. I hope those at the CPAC will rally behind Mike since he is more conservative than McCain and the CPAC is the most conservative of the GOP out there. The one hope is that Romney will go to the CPAC is not get a warm reception, since those there are hesitant to attach to someone that is not going to win. Plus Romney needs to take his money and go home. His wife did not look too enthused at the speech he gave Tuesday night. I am hoping our Primary will go well for Mike Saturday. We are heavy military in my area so they may break McCain’s way. But we are the Bible Belt too so this helps Mike also he was Governor of the state that borders ours.
The main thing is to continue to trust God to work all this out to his favor for us!
