Six Reasons Huck can win-despite the Florida Primaries

First and foremost, the Huck supporter must understand, that even though you may have poured your heart and soul into a state as a volunteer, from the birds eye view of the overall effect, it’s just 57 delegates from a state no one expected Huckabee to compete in.

Florida was only a “win or go home” if you have done nothing else across the country (like Rudy).. but Huck is not only in this race, he has a ton of states he should take! Sure, no one likes a “loss”, but this is a long race and there are so many more factors that go into determining the winner. Miami is not Georgia. Tampa is not Arkansas. Orlando is not Tennessee, and Key West definitely is not Oklahoma!

NOW, the top 6 reasons why Huck can win (and why supporters should continue to work hard and run to Super Tuesday):

Reason 1: Huck will win the South and Mid-America vote

Anytime a candidate loses a state, they will get accused of spinning a loss into something positive. However, we must look at the facts as we see them today. Real Clear Politics and others have Huckabee ahead or in a battle for 1st in Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas and North Carolina! (Click on the map at the top of the post to see a sample of what the US could look like after Super Tuesday.)

All you will hear from the media is that Huck can win in the “Christian packed states”, but in a “real state” like Florida, he comes in 4th. If coming in 4th in a state means it’s over.. then why didn’t Romney quit after SC? Romney is a candidate who can’t win EVEN ONE SOUTHERN OR HEARTLAND STATE! Yet he’s in the “one on one battle for front runner status” with McCain.

The media is actually trying to tell us that the Southern states and the Middle America states, like Nebraska and Iowa, mean nothing! That they are a bunch of rednecks and born-again Christians – second rate citizens who don’t have the high-class intellect like the people in New York and California to chose our next President. The fact that Huckabee could walk away with WINS in Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Mississippi, Missouri, Kansas, and Texas and compete in W Virginia, Ohio, Montana, Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Minnesota, and Maine, makes it IDIOTIC to count him out!

And with the news today that 31 Missouri legislators decided to back Huckabee, that gives him a very important edge in the tightly contested winner-take-all state of Missouri. Winning Missouri will go a long way to helping Huck have a strong showing in the Super Tuesday delegate count. With 58 delegates to give, Huckabee can not only grab a very important 58 delegates, but he keeps them out of McCain’s wrinkly hands. Needless to say, it’s a critical state for Huck.

As supporters, we must keep our collective shoulders to the grindstone and cover our ears to the profane sound of the worthless, biased media. Don’t let the media convince you a loss in FL is lights out for Huckabee! If you have been thinking that, then you have been FOOLED and you watch and read too much of the garbage the media is putting out! Wake up! All the media will focus on is Huck’s 4th place finish in FL, not even mentioning the fact that Romney did just as poorly in major Southern state South Carolina!

There is a disdain and hatred by the media and some GOP pundits for a Christian candidate, and they want nothing more than to paint the picture of Huck’s demise. They want him out of this race, they want to crush your spirit, and most of all, they want you to leave the important job of “President Pickin’” to them.

But, be of good cheer, the truth will shine through in the end! Huckabee has a chance to LEAD in delegate count coming out of Super Tuesday – thats right, I said LEAD! Please, turn off your TV’s and take the fattest Cuban cigar you can find and shove it in Rush’s mouth! In my “scratch paper” delegate figures, if Huck takes winner-take-all states of Missouri and Montana, wins the South and Heartland, and competes as the numbers show, the Feb 5 delegate count would too close to call across the board.

Of course it won’t be easy. Yes it will be a dog fight all the way to the end. Obviously, states can go every which way come election day, and delegate splitting is next to impossible to predict, but the point is, Huck will not be left on the sidelines come Super Tuesday! Even if he’s in third coming out of Feb 5th, it won’t be by some insurmountable blowout lead. There are too many states left in play still that Huck has a legitimate shot at winning. Heading into March, it will still be a 3 man race, not 2 like the media has already called!!

Reason 2: Huckabee can win some/do well in some closed states (the McCain factor)

Another thing we all keep forgetting, is people still hate McCain! In closed primary states, he could still suffer the consequences of his YEARS of back turning to the Republican Party. Early closed primary states that Huck could take are Maine and Alaska, while later primary states are Hawaii, Kentucky, Oregon, New Mexico and South Dakota.

Reason 3: Another one bites the dust!

The field is narrowing, yet again, to 3 (assuming Ron Paul stops getting college students across America to post his “Who’s Ron Paul?” signs everywhere in exchange for a six-pack of Busch and a Michael Moore Fahrenheit 9/11 conspiracy DVD. OK Ron, your point has been made, Bush caused 9/11, went to war for fun, the government is out to get us all, and Elvis was the 2nd gunman on the grassy knoll… now will you go away?) Huckabee should get more face time in the debates to really distinguish himself from McCain and the Rominator. They can’t run from their records forever. Check out my previous post and listen to the Rominator talk for FIVE MINUTES in a passionate defense of a womans right to choose! Let’s face it, debates and public speaking are Huck’s strong points. The more America gets to know him, the more they will realize that he is the true conservative in this race, and the better he’ll do in the polls.

Reason 4: Border states might not have forgotten McCain’s horrible record on immigration.

I’m not saying that Arizona will vote against one of their own, but the effects in Texas, California and New Mexico could be, and are already being felt. He is still hanging on to his stance of $5000 bucks, speak english and you’re in amigo!

Reason 5: The Romney/ McCain split factor

They are fighting like cats and dogs for the the Blue states!

The states that aren’t expected to be Huck’s strengths are probably going to be somewhat equally split between McCain and Romney. They will battle it out for the Blue New England states, some Western states and others scattered about. The idea that a candidate must carry all the different regions is thrown out the window in this race. This will come down to a few key wins and delegates, delegates, delegates. With McCain and Romney splitting votes, it can only help Huckabee across the board.

Reason 6: You!

The grassroots supporters of Huckabee. You are a huge difference maker. Your enthusiasm and willingness to volunteer for a good cause has a ripple effect across America! Your efforts will not go unrewarded! Your sacrifices are not wasted! Your hard work will pay off -IF you keep the faith until the end!

So lets run to Feb 5th and get Huck the delegates he needs to win this nomination!

The End of Romney Campaign?

The end of the Romney campaign

Finally, there is a conservative answer to MoveOn.org: RoeGone.org, as in Roe v. Wade – GONE. Nice, huh? What’s even nicer is the ad they’re launching to expose Mitt Romney’s record. Be looking for secular conservative pundits and compromising pro-lifers to jump the Romney ship soon. No kidding. I predict this thing will signal the end of the Romney campaign.
Unlike the other ads that have been done on Romney that primarily focus on his flip-flops on abortion, marriage, gun control, immigration, taxes, pornography etc., RoeGone.org’s ad clearly delineates Romney’s record as governor – which is very appropriate since that’s exactly what Gov. Romney said we should do. I was there at the debate last week when Romney responded to the flip-flop accusations with the words: “I can point to a very simple way to find out exactly where I stand, and that is look at my record as governor.”

Let’s do that, shall we? Watch the ad, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peFGA_HN … 75&index=0
and read the script:

In the Florida debate, Governor Mitt Romney said:
“I can point to a very simple way to find out exactly where I stand, and that is look at my record as governor.”

Really?

As governor, Mitt Romney issued an executive order forcing justices of the peace to perform homosexual weddings, or resign. Then he ordered marriage licenses changed to read “party A” and “party B” – instead of “husband” and “wife.”

As governor, Romney appointed a board member of the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association to the bench, and appointed more Democrat judges than Republicans.

As governor, Romney authored and signed a mandatory heath insurance plan backed by Ted Kennedy – including taxpayer-funded abortion on demand.

As governor, Romney overruled his own health department and forced Catholic hospitals to distribute the morning after abortion pill.

Homosexual marriage?

Tax-funded abortions?

Catholic hospital morning after pills?

Homosexual activist judges?

“Look at my record as governor.”

In a press release yesterday, RoeGone.org spokesperson Sharon Blakeney said:

“Governor Mitt Romney challenged voters to look at his record. RoeGone.org has done just that.” Blakeney is directing people to the new site: http://www.RoeGone.org and the ad posted on YouTube.

Meanwhile, the word is getting out that Gov. Mike Huckabee is the only candidate who supports both a Human Life Amendment and a Marriage Protection Amendment.

Unlike Mitt Romney whose health-care plan includes abortion on demand.

And John McCain who thinks taxpayers should fund medical experiments on human embryos.

And Rudy Giuliani who supports every single abortion for all nine months, just like Hillary Clinton, Barack Hussein Obama and John Edwards.
Huckabee stands for marriage while McCain and Giuliani (and Clinton, Obama and Edwards) oppose the Marriage Protection Amendment, and Romney opposed a Marriage Amendment to his state constitution.

The good news is the word is getting out in Florida. On Friday, Gov. Huckabee received the “Champion of Life Award” from Florida’s Broward County Right to Life for his “outspoken, courageous, uncompromising commitment to restoring legal protection to unborn children,” and on Saturday he received the “Defender of Life” award from Floridians for Life. He was also just endorsed by Tennessee, Arizona and Missouri Right to Life, which joined Georgia and Montana Right to Life and Michigan Chooses Life.

Unlike Gov. Romney, whose millions have flooded Florida with misinformation, Gov. Huckabee has been pro-life for more than 10 minutes. He first got involved in the political process as a pastor working to pass a Human Life Amendment. He also helped pass a state marriage amendment in Arkansas – a lead Floridians are trying to follow with their marriage ballot initiative. Yesterday, National Right to Life Political Action Committee issued the following statement:

“National Right to Life is grateful for the strong pro-life record established by Mike Huckabee as governor of Arkansas, and recognizes that Governor Huckabee has taken the strongest pro-life position on all of the life issues of any of the remaining candidates for president.”

And Floridian Bobby Schindler, Terri Schiavo’s brother, has just come out and endorsed Gov. Huckabee as well. Turns out he’s the best at protecting those at the end of life, too.

And Rep. Duncan Hunter’s endorsement of Huckabee is helping to bring the defense and border conservatives on board:

“I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail,” said Hunter. “Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China’s emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America’s industrial base.
“Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee’s candidacy that compels my endorsement,” Hunter added. “Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed.”

With the Supreme Court and millions of lives in the balance, there’s only one choice for a pro-lifer to make: Gov. Mike Huckabee. Tell everyone you know beginning in Florida (forward your Florida friends this article with the links to the voter guides below). Then, tell everyone on your e-mail list about http://www.RoeGone.org and the Romney ad which, in the long run, should be of help to him. Once he’s out of the race, he’ll have more time to spend with that family of his, and as Huckabee pointed out in the debate: By saving all his personal money from going to the campaign, maybe Romney’s sons will have an inheritance after all.

Media Elites Need to Butt Out

Who are they called the media to decide who we vote for. I surely believe that the media is trying to do this. If the polling is not to their satisfaction they begin the bashing of the candidate of their choice, namely Mike Huckabee. When referring to Huckabee he is always called Pastor or former Baptist Preacher Mike Huckabee, but when Mitt Ronmey is referred to it is always former Massachusetts Governor Romney and not Bishop Romney. Yes, Romney is a high Bishop in the Mormon church. Washington has lost touch with the working poor and middle class America. If all the rich people are doing well, then there is nothing wrong in the economy. When the elite start losing money then it is time to do something quickly.

I think it is far time that the media be set straight. What will it take for that to happen? I believe it is time to flood the phone lines of all the Conservative talk show hosts, any and all news media that is misrepresenting Mike Huckabee or the campaign. The Rush Limbaughs, Sean Hannitys, and the likes of them are saying Mike Huckabee is not a Conservative. I believe it goes deeper than that. In my opinion, it is the fact that he is a true Christian that does not hide his faith no matter what. He is willing to stand up for what is right even if it is not the best Conservative thing to do. His views of treating one as one would want to be treated is exactly how he acts. The “Talking Heads” do not want a man like Huckabee for the fact that he would make them take a better look at themselves and the way they treat others. I know they give money to charities, help out the military, and others things such as that, however, they are the very ones trying to do everything they can to annihilate Huckaee from the GOP campaign. I thought being in Louisiana that our politicians knew which side their bread was buttered on so they best do to suit themselves other than those they were elected to help. Our talk radio personalities do not want Huckabee to be President since he is not one of them, and them are those that are the elite Wallstreet class. I can say I did not come from that class, and am not part of that class now in my adult life.  How can an elitist understand my worries when trying to make ends meet. I know Mike knows where I come from because he was there at one time. He can’t write a check to finance his campaign. I want Mike in office for how frugally he has ran this campaign.

Yes, the news media needs to know that Mike is competing in Florida, but he does have a grassroots campaign there that is helping out for free. We don’t have to be paid to give lip service or anything else for our candidate! We proudly go out there for Mike simply because we know where he stands and what he wants for America. It is time we vote our values. The soul of America is at stake during this election year. If our children lose these values then what will they have. Yes, we teach them at home, but once they get out in the world look at what is exposed to them. This year I sent an innocent eleven year old to middle school, and now the information he has learned just blows my mind. It is at a younger age when our children are taught these deplorable things. If our nation does not get back to what the Founding Fathers wanted, then what will it have? So, the media needs to stop giving their bias to the listener, and let the listener make up their minds by themselves. Wake up America, vote your values & heart!

The Huckabee Puzzle

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA — “I want to get something out of the way because there are some pretty crazy rumors going around that the Huckabee campaign is pulling out of Florida,” Mike Huckabee said as he looked out into a crowd of 250 enthusiastic supporters at a jet hangar here.

“Well, it doesn’t look like it to me! And we’re not!”

Florida is an expensive state to campaign in and Huckabee has never had a lot of money. Major media outlets are reporting Huckabee is out of play in this state even though he’s never explicitly said he is. The campaign is saying more events are planned in Florida following tomorrow night’s Republican debate.

Huckabee later told reporters that he thinks journalists were drawing a false conclusion after learning the campaign would no longer make arrangements for a traveling press corps. He said it was “impractical” to have a press bus because of the “sheer size” of the state, and there were too many empty seats on the press plane. He did not address the matter of layoffs.

“Those news reports that our demise is imminent is much exaggerated,” Huckabee said.

Some have speculated Huckabee lost in South Carolina because he spent so much time in Michigan. Those same people think Huckabee is committing Feb. 5 suicide by spending so much time in Florida.

Posed with this theory, Huckabee disagreed that campaigning in Michigan contributed to his loss in South Carolina. He argued the campaign would have turned out a “10 point win” had the Club for Growth not dumped $750,000 of negative ads and had Fred Thompson not campaigned on a constant fury of anti-Huckabee attacks.

“Elections are all pieces of a much larger puzzle,” Huckabee continued. “I think a big thing people have to remember is that, unlike any election, this is going to come down to delegate count.”

Which is why the Huckabee double strategy of campaigning in Florida and winning delegate votes can be puzzling in this winner-take-all state.

On the other hand, if doing well in Florida is a matter of beating expectations, then it’s true expectations are very low. And there are few ways for members of the media to assess what his ground game is in the state.

Although Huckabee has been in Florida every day since Monday, he’s been holding mostly closed press events. This poses two scenarios – that nothing is going on and the campaign doesn’t want journalists to report about it. Or that something is happening and they don’t want the national media to know.

Challenged again about how he plans to win in Florida, Huckabee said, “If money were the reason that people got all the votes, we never would have won Iowa. We wouldn’t have placed well in New Hampshire and Michigan…We almost won South Carolina. We’ve been in contention in every state

“Some things that you may not see happening doesn’t mean that nothing is happening,” he continued. “We’re doing a lot of things with grassroots organizations that aren’t necessarily public events on the public calendar but there’s an enormous amount of activity going on behind the scenes and underground that will show up on Tuesday.

Huckabee also answered to opportunities posed by reporters to criticize his opponents.

Rejecting the suggestion Mitt Romney would be better fit to lead the U.S. through the economic downturn, Huckabee said, “ If one looks at [Romney’s] business career, it is largely dealing with a capital company that took companies, often broke them apart, people lost jobs, didn’t gain jobs. A lot of the money that was made within those companies ended up offshore. I’m not sure that that helps the American economy when you take people’s money and you put it in Cayman Island bank accounts…If that’s how we recover the America’s economy, I’m not sure how many Americans benefit out of that.”

Huckabee said, “Americans benefit when their government has policies that make it so people who are running small businesses and people who are working in jobs in factories keep those jobs.”

Asked about whether John McCain was right on campaign finance reform, Huckabee said McCain would have to address that for himself. He did go on to call campaign finance reform one of the “greatest disasters in this country.” He called the electoral process “not reformed but deformed.”

“If you’re extremely wealthy, you can write checks of tens of millions of dollars to your campaign and be credible – not because your ideas are resonating with people but because your checkbook is taken seriously at radio and television stations…But the fact is if you’re a campaign like ours, you’re limited to people who can only give you up to $2,300 per person”

He continued, “The other thing that has really made the system horrible is this proliferation of people who, then they can only give a certain amount of money to a candidate, then they funnel the money into Washington special interest groups, 527s…the really nasty stuff and do it anonymously. That is not real election reform at all

On receiving former presidential candidate Duncan Hunter’s endorsement, Huckabee said, “nobody is going to be able to say I’m not a true conservative. Duncan Hunter is a conservative’s conservative.”

Asked about the debate tomorrow, Huckabee said his “plan” is to stay positive and “simply go in and try to get as many questions answered as I can. I’ve got a record I can be very proud to run on. I think I’ve got a platform I can be proud to present to the American people as a most viable platform to be President of the United States.”

Ron Paul Supporters

This blog is for Mike Huckabee.  Why do you RP Supportersrs have to blog on Mike Huckabee’s web sites? It is is juvenile to be a bully on someone else’s blog!  Mike Huckabee may not have what you want, but we like what Mike stands for.  You will be surprised as to how well Mike will do for the nomination.  Mike, does not have the millions that your campaign may have, but he runs a frugal campaign and that is what I want Washington.  For a while now Congress & the Senate do not get anything accomplished, all they do is partisan bickering!  Mike Huckabee is who we want for our President, therefore, there is no need to post on this blog.  If so, I will delete your post.  Thanks for reading about Mike Huckabee though.

Rally the Troops

I know with last nights results we are disappointed. Now with a fairly good nights sleep, today is a new day! It is time to band together to let everyone hear our rally cry for Mike Huckabee.

I read on the Hucks Army web site that there are over 10,000 supporters signed up thus far. This campaign has not been about how much money we can spend, but it has been about a grassroots effort from the Huckabee supporters. With the second place finish we achieved in South Carolina, Mr. Rollins and others suggest Fred Thompson helped to split the votes that would have come our way. Suggestions are being made that Thompson may give up his Presidential run, with that being said some of his supporters will come over to Huckabee. Rudy Guiliani’s poll numbers are showing a decrease in Florida, making it more like a three man race. Mike Huckabee, John McCain, & Mitt Romney

Since Florida is a closed primary this could hurt McCain since Independents have been voting for him in New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries. So, this makes way for it to be between Huckabee and Romney fighting it out. Florida is very important since it is a winner take all state for the nomination. The delegate count is 57.

So, everyone now is the time to tighten our boots, press our uniforms, and get busy. America needs a man like Mike Huckabee as President. Not only, can he bring back values to our nation, but he can also unite Washington so they can work for Americans. He will also fight to reform the tax system, protect the unborn, keep marriage between a man and a woman, bring energy independence, and many other issues. We know what Mike wants and we need to let others know these things. It is vitally important that others know why “We Like Mike!” When

From nowhere in the polls to winning Iowa and placing second in New Hampshire & South Carolina, Mike has far succeeded the expectations of the media and the GOP elites.

Now, we have to help get out the vote in our areas. Louisiana’s Caucus is on January 22 and the Primary is February 9. We will be voting after “Super Tuesday”. We need to do what we can in other areas too. If any of us have the means to travel or provide money so that others can travel to “Super Tuesday” states to help out the campaign. Many volunteers have made this successful Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan, & South Carolina. Also, the success has to be given to our Almighty God.

Reading these quotes seals why we now more than ever need Mike Huckabee as our next President. I pray and sincerely hope that this renews your spirit to fight for Mike to win the Republican nomination and on to the White House! Saddle up troops, here we go for an exciting journey!

Mike Huckabee: Road To The Nomination

By Team Huckabee
Mike Huckabee: The Road To The Nomination

After A Decisive Iowa Victory And A Surprising Third Place Finish In New Hampshire, Mike Huckabee Leads The National Polls And Is Strong In Upcoming Primary States

THE NATIONAL PICTURE

“Following Huckabee’s Iowa Win, 25% Of Republicans Nationwide Now Rate Him As Their Top Choice For The 2008 Republican Presidential Nomination, Up From 16% In Mid-December.” (Gallup Poll, www.gallup.com, 1/8/08)

Republicans Rudy Giuliani Dropped To 20 Percent Of The Vote, While Fred Thompson Has 12 Percent And Ron Paul Collects Four Percent. “Support for Giuliani, who chose not to compete in Iowa and has been shut out of the media spotlight, has also dropped, from 27% to 20%. Fred Thompson and Ron Paul are essentially holding steady at 12% and 4%, respectively.” (Gallup Poll, www.gallup.com, 1/8/08)

And Mitt Romney? He’s Sandwiched Between Fred Thomson And Ron Paul – Commanding Single Digit Support After Spending Tens Of Millions Of Dollars. “After losing the expectations game in Iowa by coming in second, Romney is now suffering a decline in national support, putting him well out of range for the lead. His current 9% of the vote is his worst showing in the race since early October.” (Gallup Poll, www.gallup.com, 1/8/08)

NEW HAMPSHIRE HANDS MITT ROMNEY CRUSHING DEFEAT

In New Hampshire, Romney Had Everything Going For Him: He’s A Part-Time Resident; He Spent Millions; And The Last Three Massachusetts Politicians To Run In The Primary All Won. “It would be hard for Romney to explain a loss, especially because he is a part-time resident from a neighboring state who spent millions of dollars here. The three previous Massachusetts politicians to run for president here – Michael Dukakis, Paul Tsongas and John Kerry – all won the New Hampshire primary.” (Boston Globe Website, 1/4/08)

Financed By Tens Of Millions Of Personal Funds, Romney Ran Over 7,500 Commercials Targeting New Hampshire Voters – All For Naught. “The Neilsen folks are releasing daily updates of the total number of TV spots run by candidates in this race. Number one, everywhere, is Mitt Romney, who has aired 4010 commercials in the Boston/WMUR designated market area (this includes Manchester), 2262 in the Burlington,VA and Plattsburgh, New York markets, and 1258 ads in the Portland-Auburn market, which covers Maine and parts of Northeastern New Hampshire.” (http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com, 1/7/08)

So Sen. John McCain’s New Hampshire Primary Victory “Dealt Another Serious Blow” To Mitt Romney’s Struggling Presidential Bid. “McCain’s victory dealt another serious blow to Mitt Romney, the former governor of neighboring Massachusetts. Mr. Romney campaigned hard and spent heavily as he sought wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, only to come up short in both states.” (New York Times, 1/9/08)

The Boston Globe: “Romney’s Failure To Win Either Iowa Or New Hampshire Puts Another Dent In His Presidential Ambitions.” (Boston Globe, 1/9/08)

Romney’s Defeat Left Him “Scrambling For Political Survival.” (New Hampshire Union Leader, 1/9/08)

One Romney Supporter On His Candidate: “As Governor Of Massachusetts, You’d Think He Would Have Some Pull In New Hampshire.” “[Romney supporter Mike Doogue, a Manchester independent] wonders how Romney can rebound. ‘As governor of Massachusetts, you’d think he would have some pull in New Hampshire,’ he said.” (New Hampshire Union Leader, 1/9/08)

Voters Did Not Buy The New “Change” Mitt Romney. “America, meet the new Mitt Romney. Having been walloped in Iowa by upstart Mike Huckabee, the man who loves data took a look at the dismal Iowa numbers and concluded America is looking for a ‘change’ candidate. Mr. Romney is now presenting himself as that man, the person who can transform Washington, or at least do it better than his main rival here in the Granite State–four-term Arizona Sen. John McCain.” (The Wall Street Journal Asia, 1/7/08)

A Reputation As A Flip-Flopper Made “The Romney Reinvention” Even More Problematic. “[N]ow comes the Romney Reinvention, which has brought with it a new peril, given his reputation as a flip-flopper. It’s especially problematic in a state like New Hampshire, where voters witnessed Mr. Romney’s tenure as governor of nearby Massachusetts, and are better able than most to mark differences between then and now.” (The Wall Street Journal Asia, 1/7/08)

The Wall Street Journal Asia: “A Second Loss Would Deal Mr. Romney’s Campaign A Nasty Blow–One From Which There Might Be No Recovery. That Isn’t The Kind Of Change Mr. Romney Has In Mind.” (The Wall Street Journal Asia, 1/7/08)

Now, The Candidates Head To Michigan, Where “Romney Might Be Down To His Last Out.” “If politics were baseball, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney might be down to his last out. And the playing field would be Michigan, as Romney campaigns Wednesday in East Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids with his political fortunes riding with Tuesday’s GOP primary.” (The Grand Rapids Press, 1/8/08)

IT MIGHT ALL BE DECIDED IN SOUTH CAROLINA

College Of Charleston Professor Jack Bass: “Ever Since There Was A First Presidential Primary, The Winner Of The Republican Primary In South Carolina Has Won The Republican Nomination For President.” (www.abcnews4.com, 12/19/07)

In Poll After Poll, Mike Huckabee Leads The Field In South Carolina, Holding A 13-Point Leading According To Real Clear Politics.

Another Perspective: Standing Athwart Huckabee, Yelling Stop

I found this interesting article on Hucks Army web site.

Another Perspective
Standing Athwart Huckabee, Yelling Stop

Against an immutable standard of conservatism, Mike Huckabee is hardly impeccable. I find some of what he says silly and unpersuasive (for example, his support for Global Warming theory). But the explosion of snide remarks directed at him from many in the conservative movement strikes me as churlish and baldly hypocritical. How is it that the bar of conservative entry for a presidential nominee lowers for the Romneys and McCains, then rises for the Huckabees?

Okay, he is a heterodox Republican on some issues. So what? Who isn’t amongst the leading contenders in this primary race? A few years back I recall these anti-Huckabee purists lecturing California conservatives on the need to support Arnold Schwarzenegger over Tom McClintock. Now that McCain has won in New Hampshire, we will soon see this very flexible definition of GOP conservatism resurface and be told that electability trumps all.

Much of the contempt for Huckabee is confusing, alternating between descriptions of him as a socialist pansy and social reactionary. Which is it? Is he too liberal for the GOP or too conservative?

I suspect that the essential problem for some in the conservative movement (as it was for establishment conservatives pitted against Pat Buchanan in his race with Bob Dole in 1996) isn’t that Huckabee takes this or that heterodox position on issues of economics/trade/foreign policy; it is that he’s a transparent Christian conservative. That they just can’t abide, even as some of these pundits tell conservatives to ignore religion with respect to Mormonism.

Romney attended Planned Parenthood events, used to support state financing of abortion and elements of the homosexual agenda; McCain has derided in the past the Religious Right and taken any number of fashionable liberal stances. But all of this can be quickly excused. Woe to the Christian Republican, however, who talks about the culture war, or — brace yourself — rejects Darwinism.

Whatever one thinks of that highly technical debate, that the Wall Street Journal and GOP consultants like Mike Murphy set up adherence to Darwinism as a litmus test for an “acceptable” Republican nominee exposes the degree to which political correctness has crept into the conservative movement. I don’t blame rank-and-file conservatives for increasingly ignoring the snobbish sniffings of the George Wills.

Who cares what they think? How conservative are they? What new liberal social innovation won’t they soft-pedal? A “conservatism” that involves a lot of pretentious throat-clearing and maybe the recitation of a classical tag or two before coming to some PC conclusion (that feminism is a net-gain for society, that Darwin had it right, that gay civil unions aren’t such a big deal, take your pick) isn’t worth much.

Run for the hills, Huckabee talked about Christ during Christmas! Well, good for him. One of the reasons for our flailing in the global war against the jihadists is that we have become de-Christianized cowards. Does America need not one but two wholly secularized parties?

HUCKABEE IS A Christian socialist, some say. Really? If he is a Christian socialist, he is surely the first one to call for the abolition of the Internal Revenue Service. Again, it is not at all clear why rank-and-file conservatives are supposed to nod vigorously whenever a McCain or Romney supporter calls Huckabee an “economic liberal.” At least he talks about eliminating income taxes and capital gains taxes. Do they?

Romney’s support for semi-socialized health care in Massachusetts (which is almost indistinguishable from Obama’s scheme for the entire nation) is scarier to me than anything Huckabee uncorked in Arkansas. And then there is John McCain’s opposition to Bush’s tax cuts. Does that make him an unacceptable economic liberal?

But Huckabee doesn’t talk about Wall Street enough, some warn. Good; Wall Street already sups at the government trough. If he cuts off corporate welfare, I would be happy. It is about time somebody talks about getting the ravenous, regulatory Leviathan state off the backs of small businessmen, gun owners, and homeschooling families, rather than waste time on Wall Street talking to fat cats who vote for the Dems anyways.

But won’t Huckabee shatter the conservative coalition? That would be a little more persuasive if those saying this hadn’t shattered it themselves. The relative success of Ron Paul and Huckabee is not a cause of the coalition’s collapse but a reflection of it. An excessively Wilsonian foreign policy has divided defense conservatives; years of big spending has divided economic conservatives; and a tepid, stalling social conservatism has alienated moral ones.

Perhaps Huckabee can’t rebuild this coalition. But he isn’t likely to weaken it any more than have his critics, and he may even bring some long-disenchanted middle Americans into it.
